Before founding Matchmaker⁺, I spent much of my career working with law firms in the professional indemnity insurance market.
Since 1999 I have worked almost exclusively with solicitors across England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, advising firms on risk and professional indemnity insurance. As my career progressed, I began working with larger and more complex practices — including firms going through mergers, acquisitions and sometimes periods of distress.
That experience gave me a unique perspective on how law firms grow, evolve and occasionally struggle.
From time to time I saw the consequences of mergers or acquisitions that had not worked out as intended. Not because mergers themselves are a problem — they can be hugely positive for firms — but because the process had sometimes been approached as a purely transactional exercise.
What I observed was that the most successful combinations always had something in common: alignment between the people, the culture and the long-term vision of the firms involved.
Where that alignment was missing, problems could emerge later.
In particular, I often saw situations where:
• cultural compatibility had not really been explored
• the personalities of the partners had not been fully considered
• risk, due diligence and professional indemnity considerations were addressed too late
It reminded me of something I had often seen in recruitment — where CVs are circulated widely until something sticks.
But a law firm merger or acquisition is far more significant than hiring one individual.
Rather than operating like a traditional broker, Matchmaker⁺ focuses on genuine matchmaking between firms — understanding the ambitions, culture and people behind each practice before introductions are made.
It’s also why I personally visit firms across the UK, meeting partners face-to-face wherever possible. Those conversations provide insights you simply can’t gain from emails or spreadsheets.
Having worked with law firms for more than three decades, I understand how they operate — not just commercially, but culturally and professionally. My background in professional indemnity insurance also means that discussions around mergers and acquisitions naturally include risk considerations from the outset.
The aim is simple:
• to help firms find the right partner
• to ensure cultural and strategic alignment
• and to create combinations that genuinely strengthen both firms
When the match is right, the results can be transformational.
And that’s exactly what Matchmaker⁺ was created to achieve.
